Let’s look at how and why people mark Día de Los Muertos and how the celebration has changed since its ancient inception. While the two annual events intertwine, there are vast differences in their traditions and observance. Contrary to what some people might think, Día de Los Muertos is not a Mexican version of Halloween. In fact, UNESCO awarded the holiday “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” status in 2008. Take a moment to pay your respects.It might sound like a sad occasion, but Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a wonderful celebration of both life and death. Turn down the lights, light your candles, and channel all of the magia that only a lit altar can bring. My aim is to always make an offering that is food based, one that is drink based, and one that is funny and would make them laugh.ġ0. I put out tequila, candy, favorite albums, lipsticks, dog treats and old favorite toys, photos of places they loved to visit, favorite books - really there is no limit to what you can put out as an offering.
